Question: What are the Varsity Quiz rules?
1. Times
Teams should arrive 15 minutes prior to the time scheduled for their match. Teams must wait quietly in the assigned area until called. No one connected with any team other than those playing the particular game may watch other games.
2. Forfeitures
A team, consisting of at least (4) four team members and a coach or school staff member, must be present and ready to play no later than 15 minutes after the scheduled starting time for a game. They will forfeit the game if they arrive past this time unless school bus transportation was at fault. A coach and/or school staff member from the teams school must be present during the entire game or a forfeiture will be made. If both teams have 5 players, the match will be played with 5 players.
3. Student Managers
Each team should have a student manager who will be responsible for score keeping at all games. This person should be familiar with scoring methods and equipment used during the game.
4. Dress Code
Coaches will be responsible for the physical appearance of their students. Students are representing their schools and should be dressed appropriately. (Channel 10 requests that white tops not be worn for TV games.)
5. Name Cards
Coaches will be responsible for providing name cards for all matches.
6. Substitutions
Coaches may substitute players at the end of each round during a game.
7. Answers
The first answer will be considered as the intended answer. Players may not ramble and give multiple ideas and/or answers in the hope that one of the elements will be accepted.
8. Protests
No protests involving the content of questions may be filed. Protests may be filed on violations of regulations or on answers. Only coaches can protest at the end of that round. These protests can be on matters concerning signaling of answers, mouthing answers, or in any way prompting a player. As with all matters, they will be settled by the Coordinator, Judge(s), and the Moderator.
9. Tie Scores at the End of the Game
If the score is tied at the end of the third round, a tie breaker will take place. The tie breaker will be speed round questions and will continue until one team answers three questions. No substitutions will be allowed before the tie breaker. This procedure is the same for school and TV matches.
10. Last Question
When the bell rings marking the end of the game, a question currently being read will be finished and an opportunity given to respond to the question.
11. Sportsmanship
-
a. Good sportsmanship must be demonstrated at all times. Any form of providing assistance to the players by the audience or other team members such as mouthing answers, hand signals, or failure to wait in the assigned waiting area until called will result in a forfeiture. Talking or creating a disturbance by the audience during game play will cause either removal of the offenders or a forfeiture for that team. During team questions, the team not answering shall not talk or otherwise disturb the other team.
b.In the spirit of good sportsmanship and fair play the CCSD expect that when teams are significantly ahead coaches should employ the following strategies as appropriate:
1. Substitute other members of their team to play including removing students who are earning a high proportion of your teams points.
2. Encourage players to give some time to the other team to respond before buzzing in.
Coaches that disregard the expectations will be contacted by the activities office to explain the steps they took as to not run up the score. School Administrators will be contacted if a team consistently runs up the score without strategically subbing
12. Tie Records at the End of the Regular Season
In case of a tie record, the winner of the match in which the teams played head-to-head will be declared the winner. In case of a 3-way division tie in which winners cannot be determined based upon head-to-head season matches, a round 1 playoff among the 3 teams will be scheduled. Total playoff points will determine placement if not determined
